LAST SUMMER, MY YOUNGEST ASKED TO GO OUT ON THE LAKE for his birthday (11 years old already!). We chose Lake Berryessa because it’s local, about halfway between Sacramento and Napa. Needless to say, we had an amazing time that day. I met a few of the very helpful staff during the reservation process and offered my business card should they ever desire support on their website. Fast forward a few months, we were kicking off a project to redesign their site. Connecting with local businesses has to be one of my favorite projects.
CLIENT: Lake Berryessa Boat Repair
DELIVERABLE: Website Design
Tom is a talented and amazing designer, with a sharp eye for aesthetics. My previous design was barebones and needed to pop, and he turned it around with a beautiful layout, color, and typography.
The previous site was published five years ago on a custom WordPress theme. Time had taken its toll on the site. The design didn’t fit the brand and the backend or implementation made it very difficult to post a simple content update.
My first step with all projects is to invest an hour talking about the basics. What is the primary goal of the website? Who is your audience? How do you want visitors to perceive you? All of these critical questions lay the groundwork for design elements such as the color palette and typography. Our brand adjectives were clean, simple, and friendly.
Testing various fonts in Figma.
After combing through several options for the typography, we landed on Founders Grotesk, which gives little hints friendliness for headlines and Inter, solid around for a clean, simple copy text.
Selected typeface for the project.
After the brand elements were finalized, the next step was to mockup the design in Figma. Here we insert the previously noted progress into a layout and go through a series of iterations and reviews with the client. Once this was finalized, we moved into implementation (WordPress in this particular project).
